Born This Way, A&E, and Bunim/Murray Productions
Born This Way, a docu-series following seven adults with Down syndrome, is a first-of-its-kind television program that is helping to shine a national spotlight on disability rights issues. By inviting viewers into the homes of these families a number of important topics are being brought to light for an audience that otherwise would have little or no exposure to the I/DD community.
This show has brought the lives and experiences of individuals with I/DD to a whole new audience. Highlighting a group of individuals with disabilities living in the community and pursuing their dreams, Born This Way is shattering stereotypes about people with disabilities. Many viewers may have never imagined an individual with I/DD being in a relationship, let alone getting married, having a career, or pursuing dreams of success in the entertainment world. Additionally, the show is powerful and meaningful to individuals with I/DD and their families as they realize they have shared experiences with the cast of the show. Simply put, Born This Way shows what life is really like for individuals with I/DD and their families.
